Neil was known as a loving and devoted grandfather who taught each one of his grandchildren how to swim. He embarked on a second career as an artist, creating acrylics featuring places he and Jean visited in their travels.
In retirement Neil and Jean traveled across Europe, Canada, Mexico and the United States. In June 2001 Neil retired following 40 years of research and teaching. This effort then led to a National Science Foundation grant to fund the activity. He had the idea of bringing together undergraduates from four-year colleges from around the Southern states to participate in research in the FSU nuclear accelerator lab. He supervised the PhD research of more than 10 students and was a popular physics teacher at both the introductory level as well as being a part of a course that unified nuclear and high energy observables. Neil was an innovative experimental physicist and developed a new technique for measuring a nucleus that doesn’t exist as a stable product, but whose existence is a mid-way product to producing carbon of which we are made.
